Setting up your wireless network is simple once you’ve received satellite Internet from your provider. It’s so easy, you can do it by yourself. Since the satellite Internet provider can only set you up with the service, they won’t offer support for setting up the wireless network.

Step 1 – Is Your Computer Properly Equipped?
Most new computers come set up for wireless networking, but if your computer is more than a few years old then you may need to purchase a network adapter. Similarly, you’ll want to make sure your computer runs on an up-to-date operating system and has a current anti-virus software installed. Both of these items will keep your computer, satellite Internet connection, and wireless networking running smooth.
Step 2 – Purchase Proper Equipment for External Wireless Networking
The two pieces of equipment you need are a CAT5 cable and a wireless router. If you don’t get cables with your router, they are available at most computer stores. Computer stores sell routers from $10 on up, and they can also be found online.
In the long run it pays to purchase a more expensive router, as cheaper ones may not provide the quality you want, but stay away from the routers on the expensive end, as they are for commercial, not home use.
Your best bet for your home wireless satellite network is a reliable brand like Belkin or Linksys, usually around $40. Read online reviews before you buy to make sure the router you choose is the wireless router you need.
Step 3 – Wireless Network Setup
Once you get your satellite Internet service, read the manual that came with your router before beginning set-up, and be aware of the necessary safety precautions. After you understand the instructions, then you can hook up the router to your satellite Internet modem. One end of the CAT5 cable should be connected to the router’s WAN port, and the other end should be connected to satellite modem’s LAN port.

Step 4 – How Do I Connect the Network?
Again, follow along in your user manual here. Software may need to be loaded onto your computer at this stage, and a USB adapter (see Step 1) may need to be plugged in if you don’t have wi-fi built into your computer.
Step 5 – Wireless Satellite Internet Privacy
When asked, you should password protect your wireless satellite Internet network. This will prevent neighbors from using your connection, which could possibly slow down your high speed wireless Internet service.
